With agriculture being the backbone of the Indian economy, the use of agricultural machinery has increased at a rapid pace in recent times. Agricultural machinery is manufactured in India at three different levels, namely village-level small-scale industries, medium level enterprises and the highly organised large scale sector. India is one of the largest manufacturers of agricultural tractors worldwide and the northern states of the country are some of the biggest consumers of agricultural machinery. A large part of the country’s tractor production is also exported to other countries. Agro-based equipment is used for a wide variety of farming purposes such as tilling, sowing, threshing, irrigation, and so on. Similar types of equipment include electric motors, irrigation pumps, diesel engines, power tillers, and many others. Several factors such as the government’s encouragement to the agro sector in the form of cheap and easy finance options has led to farmers switching over to more mechanised equipment in more and more areas.
