In India, vehicle servicing is highly fragmented, largely due to the dominance of roadside mechanics and other unorganised units. This has proved to be a major challenge in setting up of authorised service stations, and the concept as a whole has gained popularity only recently. Nowadays, most major automobile manufacturers, both domestic as well as foreign ones, have opened their own service centres and workshops where customers can have their vehicles properly serviced. These service stations offer a clean working atmosphere, trained mechanics, original spare parts as well as transparent billing. All these services are, however, offered at premium prices which again compels many vehicle owners to opt for roadside service stations.
Only recently, a growing tendency has been observed towards setting up of nationalised chains of authorised service stations that offer organised services at an affordable price. While a section of individual vehicle owners are already showing an orientation towards such nationalised service stations, their success would also depend on attracting commercial vehicle owners, since the latter have an inclination towards unorganised car servicing.
