India is one of the largest producers of paper on a worldwide basis. The pulp and paper industry is an important source of employment generation and is a significant contributor to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP). The rapid expansion of the paper industry can be gauged from the fast pace of increase in the number of paper mills operating within the country. Indian paper mills use several varieties of raw materials and are consequently, of several types such as wood/forest-based paper mills, mills based on wastepaper and agro residue-based mills. However, paper mills have largely switched over to non wood-based raw materials due to increased government restrictions.
