VoIP is a very popular means of communication and is used extensively in many countries around the world, including India. However, the use of VoIP services is largely confined to the tier 1 metro cities in our country, and a lot of people in rural areas are still unaware of the concept. VoIP services are currently available in a restricted manner in India. However, active efforts are underway to ensure their approval by the Indian Telecom Commission. In technical terms, the word ‘VoIP’ refers to Voice-over-Internet protocol that is a process of delivery of voice communications and multimedia sessions over the Internet. IP telephony, broadband telephony and broadband phone are some of the terms commonly associated with VoIP services. Nowadays, a lot of smartphones and Internet-related devices have VoIP services enabled.
