Diabetes is a disease that affects a majority of the world’s population and is caused either by the lack of sufficient insulin in the body or resistance to insulin or a combination of both factors. Due to this, diabetic patients have high blood sugar as their insulin deficiency is unable to convert this sugar into fat. The broad classifications of diabetes are type I diabetes, type II diabetes and gestational diabetes, with the latter occurring in pregnant women. Diabetes, in case it is not properly treated over a long period of time, may lead to partial or complete blindness, sores in the feet and skin, frequent urination and nerve damage, among others. Patients with diabetes are much more prone than others to have a heart attack or stroke. Apart from medication, lifestyle changes such as lessening body weight and dietary regulations curb diabetes to a large extent.
