India’s consumer electronics market has vastly expanded in recent years due to the country’s newly affluent middle class, coupled with robust economic growth. Factors such as the retail boom, rising income levels and easy availability of finance have also provided a major boost to the consumer electronics market. The revolutionary wave of digital technology has also fuelled growth in the areas of consumer electronic devices such as camcorders, DVD players/recorders, still camera, computer monitors, LCD TV, and a host of others. Spending on consumer electronic devices is expected to grow in important sectors such as cheap mobile handsets, televisions sets, set-top boxes and notebook computers. The continuously falling prices of consumer electronic items are also enabling a much higher number of consumers to be able to spend on such items than before. Further, low penetration level of consumer electronic goods in the country leaves a lot of scope for future growth. This, in turn, is attracting huge foreign direct investment (FDI) in the sector.
