In medical terms, point-of-care testing refers to a medical testing procedure that is conducted at the location where the patient is receiving medical care. Point-of-care testing has immense potential in a country like India where patients are located in remote areas where there is insufficient or zero laboratory infrastructure. Since point-of-care tests can be administered as a part of primary healthcare facilities, they enable immediate medical care to patients. The results of the medical tests conducted are available much quicker, thereby making immediate diagnosis and medical care possible.
A variety of point-of-care testing procedures are available such as blood glucose testing, rapid coagulation testing, urine strips testing, pregnancy testing, hemoglobin diagnostics, cholesterol screening and so on. A number of portable and handheld instruments and test kits are used to conduct point-of-care diagnostics.
