The Indian aerospace and defence industry has made rapid progress in recent years, helped by abundant government support and liberalisation of related policies. The industry is broadly categorised into military and civil aviation sectors, and both have undergone major transformation. Several factors have contributed to the growth of the aerospace and defense industry such as the country’s economic progress, availability of a robust manufacturing base, skilled and semi-skilled labour, relatively lower cost of manufacturing and strong support from the information technology division. At the same time, India needs continuous access to the latest technologies in order to develop as a major global aerospace and defence hub. Apart from manufacturing services, the country has also developed as an important MRO destination, with regard to providing support services to the aviation sector. Civil aviation is another area which has made a lot of progress and many private airline operators have entered the market. The government is actively encouraging significant foreign direct investment in the aerospace and defence industry to accelerate its progress in the near future. Hide this
