Road transportation is a vital contributor to a country’s economic development and India is no exception to this rule. The country has one of the largest road transport networks worldwide, that comprises metalled and unmetalled roads, as well as national highways and expressways. The improvement of the road transport network requires substantial capital investment, besides overcoming several technical hurdles. The government has extended considerable support towards improvement of the country’s road transport network and active plans to convert some important national highways into four lanes and six lanes are already underway.
All national highways within the country are metalled, with only a handful of them being constructed out of concrete. Multi-lane highways are another welcome addition to the road transport network, such as the Golden Quadrilateral and the North-South and East-West corridors. These are responsible for connecting the largest cities within India. The road network has one of the largest shares in the country’s overall passenger and freight traffic.
