Any establishment that sells alcoholic beverages for consumption on the spot is known as a ‘bar’ and the term ‘pub’ also has a similar connotation. Bars, pubs and similar drinking places have rapidly increased in number all over the country over the past few years, thanks to its vibrant and thriving nightlife. With India having emerged as a popular tourist and business destination, the country has witnessed an influx of foreigners recently which, in turn, has led to the increase in bars and pubs as part of the overall growth of the hospitality industry. On a domestic level, the availability of more disposable income in the hands of the population and the changing preferences for alcohol has led to increased expenditure on bars and other similar establishments.
Apart from bars and pubs, alcohol is fast becoming an integral part of the menu at restaurants and other multi-level nightclubs. At the same time, the business is also highly fragmented and unorganised, leading to discrepancies in pricing and sale of spurious alcohol in certain instances, both of which are not desirable in the long run. Bars and pubs in India are essentially divided into cheap establishments on one hand, and classy, expensive joints on the other, depending upon their pricing of items and the customer profile catered to.
