The entire membrane separation process plays a crucial role in the separation industry and India is no exception to this rule. Some of the membrane-based processes that are used widely include nanofiltration, microfiltration, ultrafiltration as well as others such as electrolysis, reverse osmosis, electrodialysis and membrane distillation. The membrane separation process has a range of uses in diverse industries such as food and beverage industry, water purification, treatment of waste water and so on. In India, the membrane separation process is also used in highly polluting industries such as the leather industry.
The main utility of the membrane-based processes lies in the fact that they provide a cleaner technological alternative with regard to a number of industrial processes such as separation, purification and concentration. They are applied to a number of industries within the country, including pharmaceuticals, biotech, food and beverages, wines and distilleries, chemicals, dyes and so on.
