Osteoporosis is a medical condition where the bone density and mass declines with age, making the person more prone to bone fracture than normal, healthy individuals. Although a large section of the Indian population is afflicted with osteoporosis, the disease is sadly neglected within the country. This is created by a number of factors such as the lack of awareness about the disease, insufficient resources to tackle the situation and lack of trained medical personnel. As a disease, osteoporosis can be broadly categorized into primary type 1, primary type 2 and secondary forms. While bisphosphonates are mainly used to tackle the disease in India, other types of medication include vitamin D, calcium and hormone replacement therapy. Osteoporosis can be treated in a variety of ways such as equilibrium therapy and also with certain lifestyle changes such as exercise and proper diet.
