The entertainment industry in India includes a number of segments such as print, films, radio and television. Others forms of entertainment such as music, animation, games and internet-based content are also a part of this industry. Out of these, the two dominant modes of entertainment popular in India comprise films and television. Following its rapid expansion, the entertainment industry has witnessed considerable private and foreign direct investment.
However, the recent slowdown of the economy has affected the entertainment industry to some extent. With companies having cut down on their media advertising, segments such as television are increasingly depending on subscription revenues to generate revenue. Increasing instances of piracy and lack of a unified foreign investment policy also create obstacles for the growth of this industry. At the same time, the overall low penetration of the entertainment segment among the rural population as well as among certain socio-economic categories creates considerable opportunities for growth.
