An overwhelming majority of the country’s retail market caters to the food and grocery segment. However, the dominant section of domestic food retailers comprises small, family-run stores all across India. At the same time, a noticeable recent trend has been the spread of organised retail. Several factors such as the increase in disposable income among the working class population, modern time-pressured lifestyles and rapid growth of urbanisation have together led to the rising spread of organised food retailing. In order to ensure continued future growth, the food retailing industry needs to resolve supply chain management issues and also enable greater promotional activity so as to change the people’s general mindset about food and grocery shopping being a primarily localised affair.
