India has one of the largest population of livestock worldwide. While the animal feed market is largely unorganised, the industry is developing gradually. The animal feedstuff industry can be broadly classified under cattle, poultry and aqua feed. Global agri-business companies are slowly making a foray into the fragmented market, where acceptance of these brands is slow. Majority of the farmers prefer traditional feedstuff, preparing their own mixtures rather than utilise high-quality industry feed. Additionally, there is no enforcement of regulatory standards which compounds the problem. However, the future looks promising for the industry. The government is adopting a more liberal approach in terms of imports and setting up of multinationals. While the effect will be gradual, this will undoubtedly make the industry more organised. Moreover, there is a growing demand for poultry products and milk which has put pressure on livestock owners to increase production. Hide this
