The Indian television industry is one of the largest in the world in terms of viewership. Thousands of programmes are telecast everyday in a variety of languages through the medium of television in India. An overwhelming majority of households own a television set these days and its penetration is slowly increasing in rural areas as well. The television scenario is dominated by regional channels that far outnumber the national channels. Apart from the government and domestic operators, a number of foreign television operators are also providing their services in India. Broadcast, ‘free-to-air’, direct broadcast satellite, cable television and internet protocol television are the five basic categories of television services available in India. Going forward, digitalisation is the next step for the Indian television industry.
