The rapid growth of the telecommunications sector in India has also led to an expansion of its satellite communication industry. In technical terms, satellite communication occurs when artificial satellites are used to serve as communication links connecting different points on Earth. A number of artificial satellites orbit Earth regularly, and emit signals relaying voice, video and data from one point to the other.
The ground segment and the space segment comprise the two major components of satellite communication. While the space segment is made up of the satellite itself, the ground segment is comprised of fixed or mobile transmission, ancillary equipment and reception. Direct-to-home (DTH) satellite equipment, satellite telephones and handheld devices are some of the ground-based satellite receivers. Active and passive satellites are the two commonly used types of satellites in satellite communication.
