Orthopaedics is a branch of surgery that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of all diseases and injuries occurring within a human being’s musculoskeletal system. Orthopaedics are physicians and surgeons at the same time. They use a combination of surgical as well as non-surgical means to treat a variety of musculoskeletal trauma, infections, degenerative diseases, tumors and other congenital disorders. Orthopaedics often involves a combination treatment comprising surgical and non-surgical means. All of these processes involve certain steps including diagnosis of an injury or disorder, treatment, rehabilitation and prevention methods. Many orthopaedists also specialize in specific areas of the body such as spine, foot and ankle and hip or knee. Apart from medication, orthopaedic surgical procedures include arthroscopy, internal fixation, fusion, joint replacement and osteotomy. With a large section of injury-prone patients among the Indian population, there is an urgent requirement of more orthopaedic specialists within the country.
