The power sector in India ranks among one of the largest in the world, and has immense potential for growth in future. The sector has also attracted a major amount of foreign direct investment (FDI) mainly because of the huge size of the market available. The industry has also received considerable government support, in the form of investment-friendly and major expansion policies as a part of the Five Year Plans. The Indian power industry largely relies on coal for its capacity generation. Other sources of power include hydroelectricity, wind energy, solar energy, natural gas, diesel and renewable energy resources.
However, recently, the mix of power generating sources has changed, with the emphasis being more on renewable and alternative sources of energy, rather than on coal which is a non-renewable resource. Along with these, there has been an increased focus on production of oil and gas, and the development of the country’s nuclear power generating facilities, in collaboration with foreign players. Despite these progressive steps, a large part of the country’s population continues to remain without electricity, and frequent power cuts, power thefts and transmission and distribution problems continue to plague the industry.
