The eyewear market in India is growing at a very fast rate and is generating a considerable amount of revenue. The eyewear industry can be classified into several sub-categories such as contact lenses, spectacle lenses, intraocular lenses, frames and sunglasses. A number of foreign players have now entered the Indian eyewear market, especially in the areas of sunglasses, contact lenses and spectacle frames. The changing consumer preferences and rise in income levels have led to the fast-paced growth in the eyewear market.
At the same time, a distinct change in lifestyle where people are spending a large amount of their time looking at digital screens is causing a strain on their eyesight, which again is spurring growth for this industry. There is an increasing inclination towards branded eyewear as people are becoming more fashion conscious, especially in urban areas. However, the unorganised sector dominates the eyewear segment in rural and semi-urban areas, thereby leaving much scope for improvement.
