India has one of the world’s largest population and subsequently, the country’s consumption of energy is going up at a rapid pace. Even then, it is unable to fully meet the ever-increasing domestic demand. This is where the concept of ‘energy maps’ gains significance. A proper energy map helps in systematic utilisation of the country’s energy resources to enable it to cater to the needs of both the urban as well as the rural population. Energy maps also help in assessing the exact potential of the country’s present installed capacity and also help to judge as to how far it will be able to meet up with potential requirements.
India meets its energy requirements through a mix of both non-renewable and renewable resources. While non-renewable resources include coal, petroleum and natural gas, renewable resources include wind energy, solar power, hydro power, biomass and so on. The massive increase in demand for energy in recent times has been fueled by a number of factors such as the growing number of vehicles in the country, rise in offices and industrial units, and the increase in electrical equipment.
