A hearing aid is a medical or rather, electroacoustic device that is designed in such a way so as to magnify and also modulate sound for hearing impaired persons. Hearing aids are created in such a way so as to fit in or behind a person’s ear in a variety of ways depending on their type and category. These devices are typically used by persons with mild to moderate to moderately severe deafness. Other types of devices that are similar to hearing aids include cochlear implants and bone anchored hearing aids. There are several types of hearing aids and some of the popular categories include behind the ear aids, in the ear aids, invisible in canal hearing aids, disposable hearing aids and bone anchored hearing aids.
A separate category of hearing aid devices involves personal, user, self or consumer programmable hearing aids. These types of devices enable the consumer to alter their personal hearing aid settings either remotely or by using their desktops or laptops. India has witnessed tremendous expansion of the hearing aids market in recent years, mainly due to the rapid increase in the country’s aged population. A growing number of domestic and multinational companies are doing brisk business in the hearing aids segment in India.
