Broadband services have increasingly replaced dial-up internet access services in most countries of the world. Broadband services provide much faster access to the internet than dial-up services and are widely used to quickly download movies, songs, video clips and so on by a growing number of users. In technical terms, broadband refers to wider bandwidth of a medium of transmission, which gives it the ability to emit multiple signals and types of traffic at the same time. There can be a number of media of transmission such as optical fiber, twisted pair, coax and wireless. The communication bandwidth for broadband should be at least 256 kbps or kilobytes per second. All over the world, broadband is a marketing term used by cable and telecom operators to sell expensive data rate plans, especially for internet access.
Broadband is also a term that refers to cable television in the realm of analog video distribution. Broadband services have enabled the use of a lot of modern-day online-based features by consumers, including video conferencing, virtual private networks (VPNs) and online gaming. In India, telecom operators provide broadband access subject to regulations framed by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).
