The services industry is one of the rapidly growing sections of the country’s economy and includes a number of sub-categories such as healthcare, education, transportation, communication, information technology, media and entertainment, travel and tourism, retail, financial services, real estate, insurance, the hospitality industry, and so on. The services industry is also one of the biggest contributors to India’s gross domestic product (GDP).
Some of these sectors such as healthcare and education form the backbone of the country’s socio-economic development, while others such as information technology and communication services are essential for its transition from an agro-based economy to a knowledge-based economy. Other sectors such as retail and the hospitality industry generate employment and help in economic progress. The services sector, as a whole, is also instrumental in attracting substantial foreign direct investment (FDI) into the country.
