The energy services industry in India is still at a nascent stage as compared to international standards. As such, energy trading at an international level is yet to develop in a regularised way and is hampered by a number of issues. Energy services, that utilise commercial energy resources in a productive manner, have attained significance in recent times due to the focus on energy management and resource sustainability. Subsequently, energy trading is becoming lucrative as a number of countries are keen to acquire clean and efficient energy resources at a reasonable price.
Energy trading would ultimately be good for a country like India, as presence of foreign players and the resultant competition is likely to make the domestic sector more efficient in delivery of such services. Although India does not have the necessary edge in energy-related services, it still stands to gain from energy trading as most developed countries are more interested in marketing their own energy products and services. At the same time, targeting emerging markets is another area which can make export of energy services profitable for the country as a whole.
