The Indian freight industry has witnessed rapid expansion in recent years, in line with the growth in the manufacturing sector and the country’s overall gross domestic product (GDP). The government has placed increasing importance on transport and logistics services, which has, in turn, led to the development of the freight transportation segment. Freight operations can be broadly classified into air, road, rail and maritime freight services. However, while the scope of the country’s freight operations is truly huge, a large part of it is unorganised and fragmented. The presence of a large number of brokers and fleet owners also leads to a marked absence of an organised pricing and distribution policy.

Other categories such as road and rail freight have also recorded a high turnover. However, the entry of private players into the sea freight sector has led to its accelerated recent growth.
