With the rise in incidences of drug abuse all over the world, drug tests have assumed priority in various fields ranging from athletics to the business process outsourcing (BPO) sector. The term ‘drug test’ refers to the medical analysis of one or more types of biological specimens such as urine, blood, hair or saliva to check for the presence or absence of any specified drug(s).
In recent years, the IT and ITes industries have acquired a lot of importance and are substantial revenue earners for the country. These industries employ a large amount of young employees, a major proportion of who sometimes indulge in drug abuse, given the odd working hours and various other factors involved. This, in turn, reduces employee productivity and makes them prone to committing mistakes, while often handling sensitive data of the companys’ customers. As a result, many of these companies conduct drug abuse screening tests, both for current employees as well as during employee recruitment. Some of the drugs whose presence is verified during drug abuse screening tests include amphetamine, cocaine, barbiturates, methamphetamine and so on.
