Rapid cardiac markers form an important part of point-of-care diagnostics and the testing strategy helps in the quick detection and treatment of patients who experience a cardiac emergency. Such tests are rapidly attaining popularity in India and are in considerable use in hospitals. In medical terminology, cardiac markers refer to particular proteins or enzymes that are likely to concentrate at the time of a cardiac event. Some of the most widely tested cardiac markers include BNP, myoglobin and CK-MB. Since lab-based tests require at least 24 hours to produce results, point-of-care cardiac marker tests that deliver immediate results are being used much more widely these days.
Rapid cardiac marker testing procedures are used to test the presence or severity of various types of cardiovascular diseases such as congestive heart failure, sudden cardiac arrest and so on. Going forward, point-of-care cardiac marker testing should have immense potential in India, given the fact that an overwhelming majority of the country’s population resides in rural areas where emergency physicians need to take quick decisions regarding critical cardiac patients
