The Indian consumer goods manufacturing industry is growing at a scorching pace, given the very high demand for such goods in a liberalised economy. The demand is largely the result of availability of more disposable income in the hands of the middle class as well as easier finance options associated with high value goods. In fact, one of the fastest growing business sectors in the country is that of fast moving consumer goods (FMCG). Some fast moving consumer goods segments include pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, packaged food products, plastic products, consumer non-durables, and so on. In fact, the demand is so high in some of these areas that consumer goods manufacturers are unable to supply at a sufficient pace.
At the same time, there is huge potential for the consumer goods manufacturing industry in India. This is because firstly, the amount of penetration of consumer goods in rural areas is much less as compared to urban regions. Secondly, the per capita consumption of consumer goods is relatively less in India as compared to developed countries, leaving a lot of scope for manufacturers. The industry has also witnessed a high amount of foreign direct investment and a number of international players are operating in the country at present.
