The Indian footwear industry is an important part of the country’s leather industry, and provides a major boost to the latter’s development. India is one of the largest footwear producers worldwide and makes up for a significant part of global exports. However, an overwhelming majority of footwear produced is geared to fulfill domestic demand. The footwear produced in India is broadly categorised into leather and non-leather footwear. Footwear such as casuals, dress shoes, moccasins, sports shoes, boots, sandals, rubber/plastic slippers and so on are produced in our country. The demand for footwear is ever increasing, with the rise in income levels and a change in people’s lifestyles. While footwear such as leather shoes are produced in large and medium factories, others such as rubber/plastic slippers are produced in household and cottage industries. A number of foreign players are participating or are keen to do so in the Indian footwear sector.
