The dramatic rise in the spread of wireless telephony services in India has led to a sharp fall in fixed line subscribers. A fixed line or landline telephone is a type of telephone handset that uses a solid telephone line that is made up of a metal wire or a fiber optic cable. Fixed line telephones can be broadly categorised into hard-wired and cordless varieties. Fixed line telephones are usually electrically powered, in comparison to wireless or mobile telephones that tend to be battery powered. As mobile telephony services are getting more affordable day by day, a large section of the population in India are switching over from using fixed line or landline telephones. The trend has spread beyond urban areas, into semi-rural and rural regions also.
