Managed care is a system of providing healthcare that is currently operational in a lot of countries around the world. The system essentially involves a healthcare arrangement in which a health insurance company or a doctor-hospital network acts as an intermediary between the patient and the physician providing actual medical treatment. Managed care regulates the cost of providing healthcare as well as standardises the entire procedure.
In India, while the urban rich have access to private super-specialty hospitals, the rural poor have to remain contented with primary, government-sponsored healthcare infrastructure. This has increased the requirement for a certain level of standardisation and transparency within the process – all of which can be ensured through managed care within the country. India has a system of commercial health insurance which is provided by both government as well as private organisations. The low level of health insurance among the population presents immense opportunities for future growth of the industry. In India, health insurance companies mainly cover in-patient treatment costs of patients. However, the health insurance industry faces wide variations in treatment protocols and billing processes, all of which need to be rectified for its continued future growth.
