With a major portion of India’s overall energy generation capacity being dependant on use of fossil fuels, alternative energy resources and the use of clean technology has attained considerable significance in recent years. Alternative energy essentially refers to the use of any source of energy that is not based on fuel sources. Such alternative sources of energy that do not involve burning of fossil fuels such as coal include solar energy, wind energy, hydro energy and energy generation from other sources such as bio-fuel, ethanol and hydrogen. This is also known as renewable energy since the sources are essentially renewable ones. Although the penetration level is still low in India, the country is fast emerging as an important hub for renewable energy resources. This is also essential as the fossil fuels such as coal are getting depleted rapidly, given the increased usage by the country’s ever-growing population. Another important source of alternative energy that has emerged in recent times is waste generation, in both solid and liquid forms. Recent emphasis on such forms of clean technology for energy generation has received government support and is poised to attract more foreign direct investment in the near future. Hide this
