India has one of the largest telecommunication networks worldwide, in terms of customer base and tariff rates here are much lower as compared to most other countries. Telephony is the dominant sub-sector of the Indian telecommunication industry. Digital telephone exchanges and mobile switching centres are two of the prominent network elements of the telephony network within the country. The telephony segment in India is run by state-owned as well as private enterprises.
Fixed-line, mobile and the internet comprise the three main divisions of the country’s telephony network. Out of these, mobile telephony is the fastest growing segment and India has one of the largest number of mobile phone users in the world. Apart from the government, a number of prominent domestic and foreign mobile operators provide their services within the country. Going ahead, the telephony segment has an immense potential for growth, considering the vast untapped subscriber base in rural areas.
