The entire concept of reproductive health centres on the fact that people have the right to lead a fulfilling and safe sexual life and decide on their priorities in the entire reproductive process. It also means that women should be extended all forms of medical care to ensure safe and sound pregnancy and childbirth, and all men and women should also be aware of the proper importance of birth control measures. The reduction of maternal mortality and access to effective and safe sexual health services are two of the key components of reproductive health services worldwide. In India, reproductive health services are still at a nascent stage of execution, especially for the financially weak sections of society. This results in high unwanted fertility, high maternal mortality and high incidences of sexually transmitted diseases. Although the country has a proper family planning programme, there needs to be more awareness about such services among the general public if reproductive health services are to meet up with international standards.
