The waste water treatment and sewage industry in India is still at a nascent stage and remains under-developed due to the lack of proper initiatives. At the same time, with growing industrialisation and urbanisation of the country, freshwater resources are becoming scarce, raising the need for waste water treatment to fulfill the demands of the population. Waste water and sewage treatment are absolutely essential as they are otherwise the biggest contributors to environmental pollution and are also the chief causes of harm to human health through spread of diseases.
Apart from bridging the gap in demand for clean, fresh water resources, waste water treatment is also utilised to extract valuable by-products and generate energy from it. This is also a required process to stop environmental pollution. In India, sewage and waste water treatment is carried out through various modes such as industrial effluent treatment plants, sewage treatment plants and so on. However, waste water treatment still remains a neglected area and suffers from maintenance problems, electricity breakdowns and lack of skilled and semi-skilled manpower. The future of this industry depends on framing of more clear cut policies and encouragement from the government.
