The term ‘market gardening’ refers to production of fruits, flowers and vegetables on a commercial scale, in a way that is bigger than home gardening. However, many of the principles of gardening can be applied to a market garden. The produce that is obtained from a market garden is largely aimed at locally-based markets. The gardening market in India is highly fragmented and dominated by unorganised players. People generally prefer to purchase gardening equipment from small shops and wayside establishments. This has, in turn, led to poor development of the market gardening industry within the country. While garden plants and seeds remains the dominant segment within the market gardening industry, gardening tools and implements comprise the other major category.
