India has made impressive advancements in the area of increasing forestry plantations. In fact, the area covered by forestry plantations has been rising consistently through every passing decade. However, a number of issues have arisen about the quality of these plantations or the way in which they are classified. An increasing forest plantation cover compensates to a large extent for deforestation and forest degradation. At the same time, the main purposes of forest plantations are to meet the requirements of direct consumption or that of industrial raw materials. The low level of productivity from forest plantations at present can be attributed to several factors such as improper site selection, poor planting stock and absence of proper protection and maintenance of such resources.
