Veterinary healthcare is an aspect of healthcare that is largely understressed in a country like India, although it has immense potential for future growth. Veterinary healthcare is administered through veterinary medicine which is a branch of science that refers to the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases and injuries that occur in animals. Veterinary medicine has a wide scope of application, as it includes both domesticated as well as wild animals. Veterinary healthcare is administered either by a veterinary physician, who is a qualified doctor of medicine or by trained paravetenirary workers such as nurses and technicians. India has a rapidly growing veterinary health infrastructure which comprises a wide range of hospitals, dispensaries, polyclinics and disease diagnostic laboratories. Adequate treatment is provided in these veterinary health facilities for a number of diseases that commonly occur in animals such as rinderpest (RP), foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), bovine tuberculosis and brucellosis.
