The carpet industry in India has a rich and ancient heritage, and is one of its oldest industrial segments. The industry has several advantages in the form of skilled artisans available within the country and the relatively low costs of labour. The carpet industry has predominantly flourished in the northern part of the country, and Indian-made carpets are in high demand not only within the country but also abroad. Hand-tufted carpets comprise a major share of all carpets produced in India. Pure silk carpets, synthetic carpets and hand-knotted woolen carpets are some of the other types of carpets manufactured in India.
