The consumer services sector in India is monitored by the government’s consumer affairs department and relates to the quality and pricing of commodities, food and public distribution and other consumer-oriented aspects. The formulation of policies for the procurement, packaging, distribution, quality and consumption of food items comprises an important aspect of the consumer services segment. The consumer complaints forum is also another innovative move in this regard, whereby consumers can lodge official complaints regarding the quality and pricing of commodities sold in the market. The implementation of such consumer protection-oriented policies has ensured that the sector has become much more organised than before.
The consumer services sector has grown in line with the expansion of the agricultural and manufacturing sectors. Other factors which have helped it to expand include the availability of more disposable income in the hands of the population which has led to higher consumer spending, the economic liberalisation of the country and removal of barriers for foreign direct investment into the sector.
