Haematology is a branch of medical science that deals with the study of blood, the organs that form blood and the treatment of blood-related diseases. Haematology involves the study of blood-related components such as blood cells, blood proteins, haemoglobin and the process of coagulation. Physicians who are specialised in the branch of haematology are known as haematologists. A significant amount of India’s overall population is afflicted with haematological diseases such as anaemia, lymphoma, leukemia and blood clotting or other bleeding disorders. However, there is a distinct shortage of qualified physicians in this field which needs to be given urgent attention.
