The horticultural production within the country has increased at a steady pace in recent years and is a significant contributor to the gross domestic product (GDP). However, the country’s horticultural production has a long way to go with regard to per-hectare yield and product processing. A number of techniques such as use of high-yield varieties and hybrids, high density planting, drip irrigation, integrated pest management and so on are applied to raise the level of horticultural production. Various product categories including vegetable crops, fruit crops, potato crops, plantation crops and medicinal crops can be broadly classified under the horticultural sector. Going ahead, adequate cold storage facilities and prevention of product wastage before consumption should ensure rapid expansion of our horticultural production.
