The industry is a major foreign exchange earner for the country and also largely contributes to the overall domestic industrial production. Indian-made fibre and yarn are considered to be some of the best in the world and are known for their detailed, intricate craftsmanship. The country’s textile industry can be broadly categorised into a number of segments that include cotton, silk, woolens, readymade garments, hand-crafted products and others such as jute and coir. However, the industry suffers from the dominance of the unorganised sector.
