Some doctors have described pain as the body’s own alarm system when some physical disorder starts setting in. By itself, pain can be described as a sort of disagreeable or unpleasant experience that may be both sensory as well as emotional. Pain is associated with intense stimuli that are the result of some form of tissue damage. While most forms of pain disappear quickly with the healing of the actual ailment, there are some forms of pain that are termed as ‘chronic pain’. Such types of chronic pain may be caused by diseases such as cancer, rheumatoid arthritis and peripheral neuropathy. Pain significantly affects a person’s normal way of functioning and the overall quality of life.
The general term for the treatment of pain is pain management that relieves patients of their pain-related suffering. Pain management is an interdisciplinary approach that comprises general physicians, physiotherapists, clinical psychologists, clinical nurses, massage therapists and so on. Pain management in India is often affected by the lack of awareness as well as resources, such as when people suffer from excruciating pain from cancer, caused by the unavailability of morphine. By itself, pain might be mild, moderate or severe and can be cured by a variety of medication such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, anti-depressants or analgesics.
