The development of biomaterials is still at a nascent stage in India although it holds immense potential in the realm of healthcare services. Any type of matter or surface is termed as a biomaterial when it interacts with biological systems. These biomaterials can either be sourced from nature itself or synthesized in laboratories through a number of chemical processes. Such biomaterials are mostly used as a constructional portion of a biomedical device that replaces or performs an otherwise natural function. Biomaterials are broadly divided into a number of categories such as metal biomaterials, ceramic biomaterials and polymer biomaterials.
