The market for industrial enzymes has witnessed rapid progress in recent years and a number of private as well as multinational companies are engaged in enzyme manufacture and distribution. A number of companies are also engaged in the marketing of enzymes. However, the industry has certain inherent constraints that make it difficult for new companies to gain a proper foothold. The initial costs involved in setting up enzyme manufacturing capacities tend to be high, and the sector also suffers from insufficient availability of skilled workforce. Enzyme-based companies are increasingly looking to venture out into other areas such as agriculture, food processing, dairy, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and so on. While domestic companies are mostly engaged in the manufacture of microbial enzymes, they are also looking towards glandular enzymes.
