While thermal power caters to an overwhelming majority of the country’s power-related demand, nuclear power is also an important source of power generation. At present, India has a significant number of nuclear power plants in operation, and a number of such reactors are under construction. The advantage that India has in the realm of nuclear power generation is that it has large potential reserves of the nuclear fuel thorium. The government has also extended a lot of support for the country’s relatively nascent nuclear power generation industry and has ambitious future plans to further increase the share of the nuclear power sector towards fulfilling the overall power generation needs.
