The restaurant and food services industry in India has gone through a major expansionary phase in recent years, mainly due to certain factors such as the country’s dominant youth population, changing urban demographics and availability of more disposable income in the hands of the people. The market has broadened even more with the entry of foreign players. International fast food service chains are also placing India high on their priority list, thus adding to the sustained growth. The restaurant and food services industry is a major contributor to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) and directly and indirectly provides employment to a large section of the population. The restaurant industry can be divided into a number of categories that include full-fledged restaurants, fast food franchise chains, coffee shops, casual dining establishments and so on. All such establishments have tried to broaden their offerings and cater to the changing Indian tastebuds. However, a large section of the industry remains unorganised, with roadside vendors and small wayside eating joints dotted all over the country.
